Can bunions go away?
Yes, bunions can sometimes get worse. They can, but only if you and your doctor agree otherwise. If your doctor doesn’t agree, it may be a sign that your bunion is causing more problems than it is solving.
Some people are interested in treating their bunions by wearing bunion pads or surgical foot separators. This may help temporarily, but it won’t permanently fix the deformity that caused the bunion.
Complications from bunions are extremely rare. The only other place where bunions are commonly cited as the cause is Konica Minolta’s offices in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Although it’s true that some bunion patients have to have their feet amputated because of the deformity, Dr. Minolta believes the majority of patients suffer from it permanently.
If your doctor thinks your bunion is severe and your surgical approach wouldn’t be enough, they may recommend orthopedic surgery. This may be especially true for patients who have had bunions treated at a different doctor but developed the same symptoms. There are some risks, though. For one, you may not be able to wear the orthopedic support your doctor recommends after surgery. You may have to wear a postoperative boot and put your feet back into their normal position. Also, you may not be able to walk again as your bunion will still be there.
