Do you tip hotel staff? Probably not.
What about taxi drivers? We do tip them, but only in exceptional circumstances. We don’t tip due dates or surge pricing. We don’t want to be clunky about it, and we don’t want people to feel bad about leaving a tip, we don’t want them to feel judged, we don’t want them to feel pressured, we don’t want them to feel embarrassed, we don’t want them to feel pressured to make rash decisions, we don’t want them to feel pressured to use dirty tricks, and we certainly don’t want them to feel pressured to tip out of pity or as a handout. So when you sit down to write a thank you note for a hotel staff that you clearly didn’t “choose” “on your own”, what does that tell us about yourself?
I did not “choose” “on my own”, I took advantage of the situation. In fact, I went out of my way to make it very clear to the hotel staff that I was performing an official function for them and not some random person walking into a room. I was also there with the hotel bellman, who I assume to be an employee of the hotel, to give me a heads up about when certain services would be available.
