What can I expect at a psychiatric appointment?
The doctor, NP or PA will ask certain questions about you and your life. These include but are not limited to the following:
The doctor will ask you a series of questions about your life. For example, the doctor may ask about your family history (your father and your mother were married for most of your childhood), your current family situation, your past family situations (your father was raised in an intact, traditional, and religious family, your mother was raised in an unstable, dysfunctional family, and your father was raised in an unstable, alcoholic/drug-dependent household), and your current family situation (your father was raised in an intact, religious family, your mother was raised in an alcoholic/drug-dependent household, your father came from an unstable, dysfunctional family, and was raised in an intact, religious home).
The doctor will use this information to better understand your situation. And, while he may make a diagnosis at the end of your first visit, it’s more likely that a diagnosis will take a few more sessions.
A mental health condition can sometimes disrupt your life and make it hard to manage day to day. It can be especially difficult to deal with the loss of a parent or caregiver. Knowing how to manage your feelings about your condition can help you manage day to day.
It’s important to take some time to understand your feelings about your condition. Understand that your feelings aren’t the sole reason you haven’t come in for a check-up; rather, feelings about your condition may be a contributing factor. Understanding your feelings can help you manage them.
It’s also helpful to learn about the person(s) causing your symptoms. It’s easy to determine the person(s) responsible for your symptoms if you want to know if they are related to your condition.
