What qualifies you for asylum?
You can use the Form I-589, Application to Register or Change Your Immigration Status, to apply for asylum if you fear going to another country to which you are resettled. You can also apply for other forms of protection such as “withholding of removal” or “consular protection.”
If you are applying for asylum in the United States, you should send your application to the USCIS Eligibility Center (“EL”) in the address shown on your application. You may also mail the application to the USCIS Eligibility Center by registered mail, or by fax (205) 554-2375.
In addition to Form I-589, you will need the following documents to file your asylum application:
If you are applying for asylum in the United States, you must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, with the USCIS every year you apply for employment. Form I-765 must be submitted on or before the scheduled filing date. Failure to file the application within the time period may result in the USCIS denying your request for asylum.
Form I-485, Application for Asylum and for Convention Against Torture (optional), should be submitted to the USCIS Eligibility Center within two calendar months of the date on which you filed your asylum application. If you have not filed your Form I-485, you may file it at any time, even if more than a year has passed since you last filed your asylum application.
